How did the National Mall get it's name?

Travel Info
My friend and I were discussing the National Mall in Washington D.C. Does anyone know how it got it's name?

Travel Tips
The word "mall" means a promenade or a wide, open space, often lined with trees. In the 1970's when I was a kid, shopping malls were a bunch of stores with an open space, almost like a small park, in the middle; it wasn't till the mid-1980's or even later (by my memory) that shopping malls all became enclosed spaces. So the real meaning of the word isn't the way we use it these days.

Anyway, if you look at the real meaning of the word, the National Mall got its name because it is a wide, open space made for the entire Nation to share and enjoy.
