What Are The "Must Sees" While I Am In D.C. For A Week In May?

Travel Info
I will be there around Memmorial Day. I plan on checking out the monuments and Georgetown. What are some other things I can do.

It's just me and my wife and no kids. So, a list of some good bars and restaurants would be great. Thanks!

Travel Tips
Definately Arlington Cemetery. It's chillingly awesome.

I think too many people miss the smaller museums. There's a textile museum (don't laugh), a museum of Jews in the military (you're laughing!), Mary McLeod Bethune's house and the Woodrow Wilson House, for example.

Also, avoid driving into the mall area. There is no place to park. I don't mean there are parking spaces and if you get there early, you can find a spot. I mean there is no place to park. Take the metro. And be prepared to walk your legs off.

I had the best time walking around Alexandria. Check out the world's narrowest house.
i know that when i go this summer i wanna see the Holocaust Museum, i hear its very moving.
Aside from those smaller museums mentioned like the Holocaust, the The smithsonian is really nice as well! And also the metropolitan art museum was fabulous. You could also check out the United States Mint Headquarters and see u.s. money being made. Pretty crazy to see stacks and stacks of money behind glass like that! Have a nice trip!
I've taken two trips to D.C.
Seriously, you should go to the Holocaust Museum. I had to go there when I accompanied a youth group trip and I didn't think it could be interesting but it is one of the best museums I've ever been in. I never imagined that history could be presented in such a compelling and thoughtful manner.

At one point, I saw an old man collapse to the floor and they called in some EMS people. I was talking to one of the guards on duty and he said that happened at least 4 or 5 times EVERY DAY. He said some people get so caught up that they forget to breath and pass out. What museum do you know that moves people like that.

Like all Smithsonians it is free, but you need to get free timed tickets in advance so you don't have to wait on line for hours. Check on line.

The Spy Museum is supposed to be another good museum but again, you should get tickets in advance (we didnt' get in because of that). And that one you have to pay for since it is private.

Call your congressman's office and say you are visiting DC and ask if you can get eat lunch in the Congressional Cafeteria. They have a limited number of passes to give out so call now!

Go to Arlington Cemetary. Very moving.

Here is an odd one - If you have a fondness for really bizarre things, check out the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria. It looks like a mini-Washington Monument on top of the Lincoln Memorial. The exhibits inside are so strange I cannot begin to describe them.

Ton's of great restaurants and it's been years since I lived there so I can't recommend anymore. Went to a really nice Ethiopian restaurant in Georgetown, on like M and 22 ST.
First you'll want to take the metro to get around. So many places are accessible from the metro. Check their websites before you get here to make a lsit of all the places you want to see and their respective metro stops.
Smithsonian institutions are accessible from one central website. http://www.si.edu/

Washington Zoo, Natural History museum, American History museum, Several art museums, Indian museum, National Air and Space museum, Spy museum, National postal museum, Holocaust museum, medical museum, national aquarium (the one in DC), national archives, nationals baseball game (stadium armory stop on orangeline metro) tidal basin pedal boats, and the list goes on.

Go to the DC tourism website: http://www.washington.org/index.cfm?blnn...

Chinatown has some nice restaurants and georgetown has some fine restaurants and bars as well. Sorry don't have any particular names.

Monuments:
Lincoln memorial, jefferson memorial, washington monument, white house (I think if you get to the tickets early enough you can do a tour; not sure if they still offer that. Check online at www.whitehouse.gov ), vietnam veterans memorial.

I can't think of any more but check the websites listed. Here is a link to the DC metro system.

Have fun. I live in MD and love to take the metro into DC to the museums.
