Is Maryland considered part of the south?

Travel Tips
Do people from Maryland have a distinct accent? Well, actually, in some parts of the state, they do - they actually have a VERY distinct accent, particularly in the Chesapeake region and the Eastern Shore. The accent sounds sort of Southern but sort of different. Some of the remote islands in the Chesapeake Bay have extremely unusual accents. However, the vast majority of the people from Maryland don't live in those areas so they don't have the accent. I grew up in Maryland in a suburb about 5 miles from Washington DC and nobody I grew up with has a distinct accent - it's pretty standard American English. Most people in MD live in the urban central part of the state between DC and Baltimore so they don't have strong accents, although Baltimore accents are also somewhat unusual - sort of like a cross between Philadelphia and Southern accents, just not that strong.

Is Maryland considered part of the South? Generally, no - it's considered a "mid-Atlantic" state although also a "border" state since it's betweent the North and South. It does have some elements of the South because it isn't THAT far from the South - historically, it was considered a Southern colony, for example. And it didn't secede and join the Confederacy during the Civil War, although there were troops from Maryland that fought for both sides during the war. And the only reason it likely didn't secede is because Abe Lincoln declared a state of martial law and didn't allow it to secede. John Wilkes Booth, who assasinated Lincoln, was staunchly pro-Confederacy and was from Maryland. Also - the regional cuisine is more like Southern cuisine (fried seafood and chicken, etc...) And technically, the U.S. Census Bureau does classify it as a Southern state. However, in more recent decades, it has become more culturally affiliated with the North and not the South. So generally it's considered a Northern state and that's what I would consider it as well. Source(s): I grew up in Maryland and also have a degree in geography

No and No
No i live in maryland, In the middle of maryland there are immigrants like crazy, many mexicans and immigrants, Western maryland especially the town i live in is made up of many rednecks. There is no accent. I wouldnt consider it the south. I think you are thinking of west virginia and virginia. There are many rednecks there..
Yes, Maryland is infact below the Mason-Dixon line, loved slavery, and had many people fight for the confederacy during the Civil War.

As for accent, it depends where you go. The eastern shore is very distinct, a mix between New York, austrailia, irish. Water is pronounced "wourter" there. Southern MD (ie. south of washington D.C.) is what many would consider to be a southern accent. People from the DC/Baltimore area are notorious for having rounder O's than most people. Western Maryland (like cumberland), well you get into Appalachia there, and the dialect is no exception, (aka "redneck").

Granted, if you live in any of these places, you won't hear an accent. I live in D.C. and don't think of myself as having an accent, but when I go to Texas, alot of people can tell from my "o's" where I'm from.

And here's an interesting tidbit: the colonial british didn't have the accents we consider to be "queens english" back then. Their accents were actually almost identical to the Dorchester co/Eastern Shore accent.
Yes, they do have accents, as a matter of fact, most of them say Murland instead of Maryland.
I've been to Maryland 3 times and No they do not have accents.....I'm from CA and I know a accent when I hear it. Now Tennessee and Georgia people have accents
