Need Directions from NYC area to Williamsburg, VA by avoiding DC area (maybe through Delaware and Maryland)?

Travel Tips
Fly from NY to Richmond, VA then get a car. DC is a mess no matter what part you go through unless you drive through there at night. Stay away from 95 south in VA in the afternoon!

If you really want to drive, you can take 13 through Delaware and eastern MD. Then go through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and go back through Hampton, VA to Williamsburg via I-64 west.

Hope it helps!
Hey I live in Williamsburg!

I've never been to NYC though. I would say take the Beltway, they have finally fixed the Woodrow Wilson Bridge it is alot faster and takes you right around DC.
My husband parents live right on the other side of the bridge so we take that way quite often, it saves a huge headache!

Good Luck and have fun!
Garden State Parkway to Cape May. Take the ferry to Lewes, DE. 17 or 1 (can't recall) south to VA. Follow signs to Williamsburg. Road atlas will show other options.
Try this one:

Take I-95 and go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Take Exit 1, Rte 896 South.

Follow 896 South until it becomes US 301 South. Cross into MD. US 50 will merge with US 301 about 30 miles down the road.

Take US 50 / US 301 over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (free toll). Take the US 301 South exit from US 50 at Bowie - about 15 miles West of the Bridge (Exit 13 as I recall).

Stay on US 301 South and cross over the Harry Nice Bridge into VA ($3.00 toll). Make a left turn onto US 17 South about 23 miles after the bridge.

Stay on US 17 South - nice 4 lane where you can travel 60-70 with very little lights or small towns. Cross the Gloucester River Bridge and make a right turn (or exit - I believe there is an interchange) onto Colonial Pkwy. West which will take you to Williamsburg.

US 13 is slow through the entire state of Delaware; Plus, 13 takes you too far out of the way with the $14 crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. I have driven of the above roads and you should make it in about 6 hours. You will see traffic light congestion on US 301 South in MD in Waldorf and LaPlata - but you can still go 55-60 on the section between the towns.
Personal familiarity with above roads - US 17 and US 301 as well as being to Williamsburg.
Take 301!

It's longer than 95/495, though. You can also hook up with 495 near the Wilson Bridge.

Unfortunately, there is no "good" way...
