Need tourists ideas for a D.C. trip with kids....?

Travel Info
We are vacationing with the kids this summer in DC. Kids will be 14,9 and 6. We plan on spending 4 days in DC. What should we see?
Any tips on places to see or places to eat or money saving ideas would be greatly appreciated! Also we are staying outside the city and renting a car....should we drive into the city or take the train? Thanks!

Travel Tips
First, DC is the greatest city in the US. You're going to have a great time!

Lemme start from the last question and work my way up. I would take DC metro instead of driving into the city. I'm not sure when in the summer you are coming to the city, but parking can be an impossible task, especially around the 4th. DC metro tickets are VERY cheap, maximum fare is around $2.50 per person/way (that's from one end of the line to the other and includes a rush hour surcharge). The Metro has stops for the White House (Farragut West), the Lincoln/Washington/Congress/Wa... Mall/Smithsonian (Smithsonian), and pretty much everywhere tourists would want to go.

If you've got kids that age I'd recommend the International Spy Museum. It's got a lot of fun things to do for tourists, however unlike most DC museums, you do have to pay to get in.

Check out the National Air and Space Museum (free). They have a ton of great stuff there. Another fun one is the Museum of American History (free), it has everything from Andrew Jackson's battle sword that he wore during the battle of New Orleans to Bill Clinton's saxophone.

The National Archives (free) is a MUST visit for a first trip to DC. It has the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and dozens of other important documents on display. Just remember that photos are not aloud inside.

The Tidal Basin (Jefferson Memorial area) has a nice thing where you can rent paddle boats and go around. It's a nice diversion.

Washington Mall: It has the Korean War memorial, Reflecting Pool (where Dr. MLK Jr gave the I Have a Dream speech) Viet Nam memorial, Washington Monument, and the new WW2 Memorial. Admission is free and it's a quick visit.

The White House: There is a nice park on the H Street side (Lafayette Park) where you can get good photos with the family from.

Also, you can check out the new Air Force Memorial. It's near the US Pentagon. You can metro or drive. Source(s): I go to college in DC
Other Travel Tips
The Gallery of Art. There's a sculpture garden affiliated with the gallery and there's a huge water fountain in the middle with ducks, ect. That's a good place and there are a lot of other galleries and museums around if they dont like art. Just across the road is the aerospace museum and just of the road is the washington monument and the Cherry Blossoms.
The Smithsonian
Washington Mall
Lincoln Memorial
Library of Congress
Capitol Hill

Take the train

Here's a great website for visiting DC with kids:

Take the Metro. you'll -never- find parking in DC! LOL

The Simthsonian has a lot of museums that are kid friendly. I'd reccommend the Air and Space one if you have boys. Mine loved it every time. That's one day alone.

You can spend 2-3 days on the Mall itself...that's where all the museums are at. Art, Natural History, American History, Air and Space, etc...... and some really nice Art and botanical gardens.

Food: Hmmm..... don't eat in the museums..they are expensive. Pack a lunch from the hotel if you can, and take it with you. They do have McDonald's down there as well as others...I always loved eating off the vendor carts though.....you ahve to be kinda breave to wak a block off hte Mall to find them though :)

Wear really good walking shoes! LOL, and comfortable ones!

Have fun!
hubby is a native
go to the mall..its the place near the reflecting pool by the monument and its got people just hanging out..its free and you could have a picnic there..oh and eat crab cakes..they are the best that DC has to offer food wise..
