Washington DC is the capital of the United States and Washington is a state in the northwest part of the U.S. There is Washington state and there is a city called Washington in the District of Columbia (for short--Washington, D.C.) Some people just call the city "Washington," and some people just call it "D.C." Depending on the context, they could mean the same thing or very different things. Washington DC is the capital of the United States located 45 minutes away from Richmond, Virginia. The president lives there in the White House. "DC" stands for the District of Columbia. When I refer to the capital, I say "Washington DC" and the state as "Washington" Other weird people refer to the capital as "Washington " and the state as "Washington State". To me, that is more confusing. When I refer to my state, I don't say "California State", I say "California". We know it is a state. Do you see what I mean? |
