In what state does Washington D.C lie in? |
Travel Info Virginia or Maryland? Travel Tips It's not in either state. D.C. stands for the District of Columbia, so it's a separate district - not part of any state. Its suburbs are in both Maryland and Virginia. In many aspects, it's a got many of the same responsibilities as a city - it has a mayor and city council, it charges property taxes, has its own police, schools, and public works. However it has some of the same responsibilities as a state - they have their own DMV and issue their own drivers licenses and have their own license plates. Residents pay federal taxes and vote in federal elections. However, one controversial issue is this: They don't get full representation in Congress. For example, they don't have any senators, and they only have one representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. And that representative doesn't even get full voting rights in the house - he/she can only make arguments for or against proposed legislation but can't actually vote on it. This is an important issue because there are more than a half-million people who live in DC - about as many as in Wyoming or Alaska - and they don't get full representation in Congress and many people, myself included, don't think this is fair.
