Where is a good family beach somewhat close to the baltimore/dc area?

Travel Info
We are traveling to the baltimore / dc area in a few months and thought we would spend some time at a beach. We've thought about ocean city but wondered what else was out there...please help! (two adults, two teens)

Travel Tips
For Baltimore/DC, if you are talking about ocean beaches, Ocean City is a good option, as are some of the Delaware beaches - Rehobeth is a favorite, as are Bethany Beach (great for families) and Lewes. Virginia Beach is an option if you are on the Virginia side, but it sounds like you are not. My favorite could not really be called a DC area beach, but if you are traveling from the south, the Outer Banks of North Carolina are the best family beach I know.

For any of these, if you are planning to spend a week or more, I cannot recommend enough that you avoid the peak weekend time. The travel to the beach goes over a limited number of bridges over the Chesapeake, and these can turn into parking lots on Friday afternoon and evening. Go during the week if you can, or leave early Friday morning, to avoid the rush and get to the beach for a little non-crowded time.

If you're thinking in terms of other beaches, there are a number on the Chesapeake Bay. This avoids the travel problem, but if you're thinking Ocean, won't work. Sandy Point State Park has a great beach on the bay - and is only an hour to an hour and a half from the DC/Baltimore area - you would not even need to pack up from your hotel - you could do it as a day trip. Another option that is very desirable is the twin islands of Assateague and Chincoteague, made famous by the pony run and the book "Misty of Chincoteague." If you have the right age kids you can read it on the way. Very low key, wild ponies, and fairly nice beaches.

Ocean City, MD is fun and just a few hours from DC.

Here is their fantastic website:

I agree totally, stick to OC for families... Dewey and Rehoboth are better for nightlife, and Lewes and Bethany are a little too laid back and boring, even for most familes... And don't even think about the Virginia Beach area :). OC is the best of both worlds
ocean city is your best bet really. it's not that far and offers more than other local beaches.
Sandy Point State Park has a nice beach with a view of the stuck Ocean commuters on the Bay Bridge. Even with the congestion, Sandy Point is 30 minutes from Annapolis.

I recommend this park for those who do not wish to sit in traffic on their way to the Ocean. The link below has additional information.

Ocean city, MD would probably be the closest. I hear they have a nice board walk. I tried a trip here once but my mother mapquested the directions for us, I drove...she directed, before I knew it we were leaving MD, she had mapquested ocean city, NJ :)

From that I learned Ocean city, NJ has a nice boardwalk and quaint bed and breadfast's. I would go back.

Virginia beach is another good family beach.

For get the kids and go to Atlantic City :)!

Hope this helps.
