Moving to Washington DC -- could use some advice?

Travel Info
Hi everyone. I'm moving to DC in the middle of June -- working in close proximity to the White House and I'm looking for suggestions. Anything from where to live, to where to eat, to where to go for fun. Really any advice you could give would be great!

Travel Tips
Where to live is going to depend on your budget. Most of the close-in suburbs are extremely expensive; a one-bedroom apartment in Arlington, VA or Bethesda, MD is going to run $1500 a month or more, unless it is a really gross apartment. There are many parts of the city itself that are more affordable and still quite safe. Columbia Heights has really turned around from a very bad neighborhood to a very good neighborhood; rents are on the high side but not outrageous for the area, and you can walk to the Adams Morgan neighborhood where there's tons of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Capitol Hill is also a good place to live but make sure you check the neighborhood out carefully as there are some bad blocks around Capitol Hill.

Avoid the Prince George's County, MD, suburbs. There are still some very nice areas of PG County but the crime rates are going way up and I would not want to live there.

The 9:30 Club is great for live music. 930.com. The Bohemian Caverns on 10th and U is great for a more upscale night out, especially when they have a blues band playing.

DC has the largest Ethiopian population outside of Ethiopia itself so we have a lot of wonderful Ethiopian restaurants. Many cities don't have Ethiopian restaurants at all, so make sure you check some of ours out, like Dukem on 11th and U or Meskerem on 18th and Belmont.
Others
They have really good prositutes right in D.C.
Yea here's a suggestion move to Maryland or Virginia only 20 minutes from the city but their are really no nice area's of D.C. except Georgetown and The White house surroundings are less than spectacular you will be quite suprised!
move to Maine
Its a better place
BECAUSE DC HAS A LOT OF CRIME
Hello! I just moved here from Hawaii so I will tell you what I have learned while looking for a place to live. Most people that work in D.C. commute by the metro from either Alexandria or Arlington in Virginia or they live in Maryland. I found a nice place in Alexandria which is not far from D.C. I pay $1350 for a nice two bedroom that includes utilities. When you get here pick up an Apartment Guide inside 7-Eleven. It will show you different areas and rents.

Alexandria and Arlington are great places to live because there a lot of things to do and great restaurants everywhere. I don't know where you are moving from, but if you like ethnic food you are in for a treat. In Alexandria there is a nice place to run that is called, "Four Mile Run". The path is along some water, so it is really nice. Oh yeah, if you like a really good burger, you have to go to a place in Alexandria called "Five Guys". They have the best burgers in town.

Well enjoy your move!
D.C. crime is not a myth- it can be a tough town. I'd personally recommend Alexandria, VA. It's not far from the district at all, and it's beautiful, historic, and has a great nightlife, too. If you have your heart set on living in D.C., I'd veer North towards Chevy Chase. (Southeast D.C. has higher crime rates.) Silver Spring, MD is a popular urban suburb less than a mile outside D.C. It has its own metro station, which is why many professionals and college students live there. Prices will be high, but hopefully your salary factors in cost of living.
As for fun, Georgetown is a great place to shop, eat, romp. Take the Foggy Bottom metro stop, go passed GW hopsital to Columbus Circle, and go a few blocks down M street. Eastern Market is a fun place on weekends for antique-ing and craft fairs. Very eclectic mix of people (and there's a cafe right off the metro to die for- the bread and chocolate cafe).
China town is pretty lame- just a block of restaurants, most of which are not even Chinese.
Good luck!
