If I'm planning on staying at Ronald Reagan Airport and doing the touring thing, going from place to place, |
Travel Info would I be better off trying to drive or just getting a taxi from place to place? I'm handicapped and am very limited in how much walking I can do. Travel Tips For about $30 you can catch any of the tour trolleys that operate in the area. I know for a fact they have handicapped access. All the hotels and motels can give you the information on when and where to catch them. A taxi will cost a fortune and renting a car will be a parking nightmare. Others Taxis and the subway are the best bets. Driving is nightmarish most of the time and parking is impossible anywhere in the center. I agree with the trolley tour suggestion. Parking in downtown DC is not ideal to put it nicely, haha. It's actually very difficult (it would be easier if you could get a handicapped parking sticker but I still don't think it's that easy and driving in the traffic is still not going to be pleasant). Do you have a wheelchair or scooter? Or will you be walking everywhere? There are several options. First of all, know that DC is a very accessible city - Metro has lots of accomodation - public buildings are accessible and most of the sights in Washington are public buildings. There is a bus, Tourmobile, also accessible, which you can ride to and from all the sights. It's a hop on, hop off all day kind of thing. So you can get off, see something, and then get back on. and it stops in front of most of the major sights. I'd guess that the best place to get on the Tourmobile from the metro is at Smithsonian Metro. Next best would be Union Station. Tourmobile is the best way to see all the monuments and memorials without all the walking normally involved. Others have suggested the Old Town Trolley, but my experience is that Tourmobile has a more comprehensive route, and a significant ability to adapt to people who are differently abled. I would not stay at Reagan Airport, for one thing, there is not really a hotel at the airport - the nearest is Crystal City, but there are a couple of hotels right on Metro lines - where you can take the elevator down to the Metro stop. Loew's L'Enfant is one of them - and it is right downtown, one stop from Smithsonian Metro. The Renaissance in Ballston is another. Please let me know if there is a particular sight you are interested in. I have a significant amount of knowledge about DC tourism. One more note on Metro. While all stations have elevators placed in a manner that allows minimal walking, elevators are often out of service. I would check with metro about this prior to leaving the hotel, you can check online or call them, for elevator outages in the system. But I do recommend Metro - it is very accessible, it does have elevators that minimize walking. http://www.tourmobile.com/ http://www.wmata.com/ - Metro's main page I would use the metro rail, or metro bus/access. If you call them, they will make arrangements for your particular needs. |
