Washington DC a good vacation place?

My husband and I are trying to decide on a vacation with our children. We would be travelling via car from CT. Our children are 6 and 10. My husband and I have never been to Washington DC and think it would be an educational visit for all of us.. Does anyone have specific places we should not miss on our 6 day vacation?

Awesome place! Lincoln Memorial, Capitol, Jefferson Memorial, Library of Congress, Florida House, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Museums, Fords theatre and the Peterson House (where LIncoln died and got shot), JFK memorial and gravesite, Smithonian museums.. I say GO, it's beautiful there.

Just walking on the streets is great there is so much history.

Oh my see everything above. And if you get time swing down and take your children over/under the Chesapeak Bay tunnel... I may have spelled that wrong - but my parents took me to DC when I was 7 I Think and then when I was 20 something I took my mom back there for a visit - it is a cool place - but watch the roads - it is easy to get turned and around and lost :0) You are going to have a nice time with the children - what great parents you are for taking your children to see more of our history.

Everyone should definetely visit DC at some point. Just go to all of the regular spots- monuments, museums, etc. and you should be good. Any basic guidebook on DC will tell you what they are and give you all of the info.
It is a great place if you are into history and museums. I am sure your 10 YO will enjoy the trip more than your 6 yo. If you really want to take an educational trip, wait until they are a bit older. But in general, it is a great great great destination with many many museums and monuments to visit
Yes, especially for kids.... All the museums on the washington mall.

Theres not too many places a kid between 6 & 10 would want to go but mabye a museum (the smithsonian) and you just missed the cherry blossoms which i must say were very elegant and beautiful :-) The washington monument is really breath taking on how big it is especially up close and so are the buildings but in general i think DC is a romantic place :-)
