The previous poster's description of the area is accurate as well. The best way to get there is to take the orange/blue metro line and get off at the Smithsonian stop (which will let you off in front of the main castle). Others It's on the National Mall, between the Washington Monument and the Capital Building. Facing the Washington Monument, the main "castle" is on the left, and the museums are on either side of the mall, which is really just a lawn:) (I think the American History Museum is closed until next year for upgrades, though.) Been there; done that. Located at the National Mall in Washington, DC, the Smithsonian Institution Information Center is located at the institute's first building, known popularly as The Castle. The Smithsonian Institution is comprised of 18 museums (two of which are in New York City) and the National Zoo. The collection consists of more than 142 million objects. Perhaps best of all, admission to all Smithsonian Institution museums in Washington, DC, is free It's all along the National Mall, which is the area between the Lincoln Memorial and the White House. Most of them are along this area, though the Air and Space annex is out by Dullas Airport, and there are some museums in other parts of the city. The Castle Building, which is is the HQ of the Smithsonian, is located at 10th and Independance Ave, SW. It's right accross from the Energy Department, behind in the midst of the Haupt gardens (which are lovely). Most if it is located on the National Mall. The old castle, which is the first museum building, is on the Mall. But the National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian, and that's elsewhere in the city. Also, there are other displays not on the National Mall as well. |
