I am getting ready to go on vacation in DC any good suggestions on places to see.? |
Travel Info I will be staying in Harrisonburg Va Any ideas would be appreciated Travel Tips You're staying a couple hours away from DC, so I assume you'll be taking a day trip in to the city. I would recommend starting out in the morning or early afternoon at the Smithsonian, some intresting museums are the Portriat, American Art, and the Natural History Museum. The American Indian Meseum has beautiful architecture, but the museum itself doesn't have very engaging exhibitions. After that I would wander down Constitution Ave, starting at the World War II Memorial, and working my way down to the Lincoln Memorial. The Jefferson Memorial and the FRD Memorial are often overlooked, which are next to the Tidal Basin off of Independence Avenue. DC also has fantastic restraurants, some of my favorites are Cafe Atlantico, Vidalia, Tennpehn, Red Sage, Zaytinya, and Marrakesh. For something more casual you might try Ben's Chili Bowl, Five Guys, or the Cake Love Cafe (which has great sandwiches and delicious cup cakes). Others check out the museums in DC. There are so many to chose from. Also take the train tour. It will take you to all of the hot spots in DC. AT night go to Georgetown. They have lots of nice places to eat & is a nice place to just hangout. There's no shortage of places to see. There are the Smithsonian museums, the monuments, the memorials. And they are all free! DC area native Of course the Smithsonian Museum is FREE and it is a national treasure. There is art, air and space, native american, natural history, etcetera. (I think the Natural History one is BEST) You have to bring your walking shoes and go up and down the mall. Rent paddle boats at the Jefferson Memorial. The spy museum is great fun. Check the Washington Post weekend edition to see what is playing at the Kennedy center, arts, shows, etcetera. Go to Old Ebbits Grill near the White house for authentic "government hobnobber" lunch (or dinner) for a reasonable price. Go to Georgetown to go people watching or clubbing Go to Washington's house, Mount Vernon D C is one of my favorite places. Along the Mall are the Smithsonian Museums. You can get a decent meal at the museums, generally located in the basement of the building. Go to Arlington Cemetery, this place is awe inspiring. Mount Vernon is also a must see place. The view from the porch of the Potomac is outstanding. But bring your walking shoes. If you contact the office of your local Congressman, they can get you tickets, passes and info for all sorts of stuff. But do it right now as a lot of the popular sites are booked way in advance (like White House, Bureau of engraving) you can visit your congressman's office and they should have somebody give you a personal tour of the Capitol building. |
