Extended parking in Washington, D.C? |
Travel Info Coming down to D.C. by car memorial day weekend...hotel charges 30/day for valet parking...understandably parking will be difficult during a three day weekend but do any locals have advice on this? Travel Tips There are a number of places you can park and leave a car in the District and vicinity. Union Station Parking (I don't know the rates) is a likelihood - it's right downtown. But you should expect in DC to spend at least $17 a day for parking. There are a number of other lots, PMI, Colonial parking. If you want more of a bargain, check out parking in the suburbs, either the Maryland or Virginia suburbs - and commute into the system. PMI in Rockville, MD, for example, is only $10 a day. Don't try to park on the street in downtown DC during Memorial Day weekend. In addition to the fact that it is difficult under the best of circumstances, it's close to impossible on Memorial Day because there are hundreds of bikers in town for Rolling Thunder. That said, if you are looking for some good place to park - on the weekend, there is public parking in and around Judiciary Square - some is metered, some is not. It is more likely than other parking to be free on weekends - because it is primarily for office workers and people at the DC offices during the week - spaces along C street Northwest in that area are often free on weekends. Get there early, and you may need to change your position every day. One other possibility, probably much frowned on, is to park in the sattelite lot at National Airport, for $10 a day - and take metro into the city. You can take the shuttle to the terminal, then go to the metro station, which is easily accessible from the terminal. Hope some of this helps. It may take you a while to find a spot depending on what neighborhood you are going to, but there is no need to pay for parking on the weekend and over a holiday. Just make sure you pay attention to the signs posted along the curb, and try to park earlier in the day. If you would like to park in a pay lot, the Kennedy Center has pretty cheap parking, some where in the neighborhood of $5 - $10 a day. |
