Driving from Laurel, MD to Blacksburg, VA--what's the best route?

I just want to know which route is better... should I go 70 West to Hagerstown, then 81 south? OR... 70 West to Frederick, then 340 West to 7 West, then get on 81 from Winchester? I'll be leaving Laurel at 5pm on a Friday, so I'd like to know which route is better (i.e, fastest) based on the traffic at that time.

At that time of the day, going up to I-70 is not a good idea. Traffic is a pain in the butt going up there. Plus you're going north to go south. Take 95 south to 495 west and then take I-66 westbound to I-81. Source(s): Driven down to Roanoke (1/2 hour before Blacksburg) many times on a Friday.
Other Travel Tips
The fastest way to get from Laurel to Blacksburg would be to go around the capital beltway to 66 and take 66 to 81 south. However, considering the time of day you are traveling that route could take forever with all the traffic. Since I have a particular disdain for highway travel, I would go to Frederick then take 340 and 7 to get over to 81. Have a great trip.
