Travel Info
I am planning to visit Washington, DC, during the memorial day wk'end... with the concert planned for may 27th and high security stds, is it recommended to visit washington, dc during that wk'end?

Travel Tips
it's going to be very crowded in the mall area and going to and from it. heightened security measures aren't really that noticeable. the weather should be nice. make sure you book hotels and flights early.

As another poster said, it's going to be very crowded. In addition to the concert (not that big a draw in the scheme of things) and Rolling Thunder (a big draw in the scheme of things) and the fact that it is a US holiday weekend (a really big draw in the scheme of things) it will be crowded (though not as crowded as cherry blossom time or summer. ) Last weekend my husband and I recorded our podcast (walking tours of washington DC on Memorial Day weekend - we did a walk up tour of the Washington Monument on that Saturday - and got in with no problem (you do have to be there early to get in line - we arrived around 7 AM, got breakfast and were in line before 7:30)

Security, except for July 4th weekend, really does not pose too much of a difference, if you're just a tourist. You already will have to go through a search of some kind at every venue, ranging from a quick check of any bags or backpacks you are carrying (most of the smithsonian) to the full airport-style metal detector screening (Library of Congress, Capitol, Botanical Garden.)

You may run into huge crowds if you visit Air and Space or the Natural History Museum - but otherwise, the city is really prepared for crowds - they get them all the time, and their interests are different from yours.

Really it can be a lot of fun to be downtown when there are crowds, so come on down!

One thing - don't bring a car. Or if you do, park it in a garage somewhere and take metro. Driving in DC will be very bad that weekend.

I would, the experience will be unforgettable to you. With any large city, especially during a holiday or planned event, our security is now our routine. If not for the added security, your safety would be more in jeopardy. Come visit the city. Check the web for items that may or may not be permitted in your bags, or to bring with you in to events, better to be safe than sorry!
DC is boring, stick to the concert.
I live here.
Memorial weekend is a good weekend to be in DC. Like all major tourist cities expect crowds. If its your first time in the area I highly recommend seeing it. High security is everywhere in major cities in this post 9/11 hyper sensitive country. Usually the weather is nice with just light chances of rain(based on the past 3 or 4 memorial wkns)
