Public transportation in Baltimore and Towson?

Travel Info
I'm a public transportation vet/dedicated pedestrian (never owned a car!) who is moving to Baltimore. How is the public transportation there? I plan on living somewhere in the city, though I will have to commute to Towson University a few days a week. Will this be possible without a car? Where are advisable places to live to maximize access to transit? Please don't answer if you're primarily a driver - I want to hear from people who depend on public transit to get around. Thanks!

Travel Tips
I used to use public transit to get around. Towson is served by the #8, #11 and #55 buses. The #8 bus connects to the Central Light Rail Line at Lutherville Station (where one can also pick up the #9 and the #12).

Towson University is directly on the #8 and #55 bus line. The #8 uses York Rd. from Lutherville. The #8 ends at the University of Maryland Medical Center downtown.

The Metro Subway intersects with the #8 bus at Charles Center.

As long as you live near a bus stop, light rail stop or a Metro stop, the trip to Towson U. will take about an hour - give or take depending on traffic and vehicle conditions.

{EDIT} The MTA is working on resolving the problem of bus "bunching" when multiple buses show up at the same time. Source(s): More info can be found at:

Other Travel Tips
Towson University is right at York Road, which is one of the main roads going into Baltimore. It's also close to Charles Street, which is another main road. If you live in the city, try a place that is easy to get to one of those roads, and it will be a straight shot.
It's difficult but possible. There are a large amount of buses, but unfortunately they are expensive (even with a student discount) and they are not reliable at all. I'm from Towson myself and I went to a small art high school (it's right by Towson University - Carver Center) and I had to take the public bus from there to my house since no school buses ran there. It was difficult, expensive, and annoying when you wait for an hour and suddenly three buses are there.

Make sure you plan your route before getting on the bus. And give yourself plenty of time - the bus will either get there early or late. Its rarely ever on time in B-more traffic.

You might want to skip living in the city - fun expierience, yes! But not very practical if you are going to Towson U. I know there are some very cheap apartments around there (stay away from DrumCastle Apartments - its a bad area, even though its right by stonleigh and other good areas. I live in stoneleigh and there has been multiple shootings there over the 5 years i've lived there). I'm sure you can find a good place within walking distance of Towson, and even though I moved away for college, Towson is a good town (make sure to go to the Recher for some concerts, its pretty cheap and a lot of fun!) and there is a lot of stuff to do. Drivers are pretty mean though, so be careful when walking around. I've almost been run over quite a few times.

Enjoy Towson and Baltimore!
If you want good public transport, try another city. Baltimore is pathetic, there is no metro to speak of and city buses are often late or don't show. I suggest you live in Towson and walk.
