Travel Tips
Don't let the crowds scare you off -- you can't miss the DC fireworks! Pack a picnic and make a day of it. I suggest watching the fireworks from the Jefferson Memorial -- less crowded than The Mall and beautiful reflections in the water! Also, don't plan to take the metro after the fireworks end. Either stay where you are and hang out until the crowds die down, walk to a bar, or walk to your hotel. Getting on the metro will be more trouble than it is worth until the crowds let up.

The fireworks on the 4th will be good. Expect a mob scene overall in DC in that time frame. I would also suggest you get the schedule for the Marine Band and Color guard. They normally do the Iwo Jima memorial or the like on the 4th if I remember correctly 鈥?it鈥檚 been a few years. Almost everything in the Smithsonian is air conditioned.

I would look at the historical museums and other places of interest in Washington, D.C., since July 1st through 5th is a short visit. Enjoy the fireworks at the Washington Monument. It's spectacular.
Take your patience!!!!! My in-laws went to DC 2 years ago over July 4th and they said they would never do it again. Very crowded, long lines to get inside museums. Very tight security at the national mall.

They didn't even stay for the fireworks it was so crowded. They actually went back to their hotel room and viewed the fire works from there (13th floor room).

Try and have fun! DC is great place, we love to visit there but not July 4th.
Don't waste your time trying to see the fireworks. Or even trying to get downtown on the 4th. It's just not worth it.
I actually live here in the DC area and I don't suggest trying to get downtown on July 4th. It is more trouble than it's worth. If you really wanna be down there you will have to be down there ALL day long to make it worth it. Ever since 9-11, they have security check points and you aren't allowed to bring coolers (they may have lowered the security level I'm not sure). But you can purchase beer at the concession stands on the mall.

There are a few interesting places to see. Definitely all the museums are nice but they WILL be VERY crowded during that time frame because of the Folklife Festival. Which is an interesting thing to see. Food to taste and things like that.

If you wanna see a nice set of fireworks on the 4th without going through so much trouble you could try visiting some of the suburb firework shows. I put a link below.

Hopefully this is helpful to you.
