What are some must see things in D.C? |
Travel Info i am going to D.C this Memorial day weekend i wanted to get some recomendations for places to visit. what was your favorite place and why? what place would you reccomend Travel Tips Any of the museums are excellent. Definitely go to the National Gallery of Art. (www.nga.gov). Any of the Smithsonian museums - unfortunately my favorite, the American History Museum, is closed for the next few months or year or so for renovations. But any of them are worth seeing. The Smithsonian's website is www.si.edu. All of the monuments and memorials are neat too. Others Smithsonian...all of the parts! There is no way to do all, but the History Museum, Air and Space, and the National Archives are all great. Remember our National Zoo is there also and is a great one. The one really good thing is that most of the museums are close together, so once you get there you can decide. I have done the White House tour, but it is very short and usually a long line. The capitol tour may be available, but you can see most of what you want on your own. If you are really interested, you might want to tell your Representative or senator that you are coming and most will arrange a meeting and tour. If this is your first trip, just work your way around the mall. Highlights - U.S. Capitol steps, Vietnam War Memorial. Of course you have to stand in front of the White House. If you have to choose between museums, go to Air and Space - you'll see all the famous aircaft (space ships, Spirit of St. Louis). The National Gallery is fantastic, I can wander there for hours. I go there all the time. The Smithsonian has so much to offer. The Air and Space Museum is fun, Natural History is cool and American History museum is great as well. The Capitol offers a great tour. Def go see the Vietnam Memorial. If you can only go to one memorial (and DC has tons) go there. It is truly moving to see. The International Spy Museum is fun, esp. if you have a "kid" inside you. You'll never see it all, but those tend to be the favorites of my friends who have visited and allowed me to play tour guide. The Holocaust Museum is a "must see". I would then go for the Museum of Natural History, the Air & Space Museum, and the ZOO. Personal Experience. Twenty years with the federal government. also try to see the native american museum. awesome displays, interactives, videos & artwork! |
