Travel Tips
No, Capitol Hill is one of the most dangerous areas in the beltway. I would suggest moving to suitland or even arlington.
You shouldnt live in Capitol Hill, especially if your white. I used to live there in the 1980's and let me tell you, I was afraid to go outside at night.

ok during the daytime, but like most of DC proper; not so nice after dark. Do not walk after dark, take public transportation
No not really. The area is actually improving though. As someone else mentioned it is safer in the daytime than it is in the night time. Look at Arlington or Alexandria somewhere close to a Metro stop if possible.
I live 4 blocks from Union Station. First, ignore the person who lived here in the 1980s. The neighborhood has changed immensely from even a few years ago. There is crime, but in general I feel very comfortable walking around. On a weekend afternoon, it's like Mayberry - kids playing, dogs walking, people gardening, chatting to neighbors - just absolutely wonderful. You might want to be slightly more cautious at night, but my wife and I still take walks from our house to the Capitol almost every night. If my wife gets home past 9 pm or so, I generally walk over to Union Station to walk back with her. However, usually there are a dozen people on the block with us, as everyone gets off the Metro and walks home.

Also, specifically where would the sublet be? There is more crime further north and further east. If the sublet is at 3rd and D NE, absolutely no problem. If it's 2nd and I Sts, I'd be much less comfortable.

Here are two great websites to learn more about the area:

All the crime news about the area (note that it covers an area that goes much farther east, which has more crime).

News about the H Street area.
Actually quite dangerous in that area. It is a "renewing" area and is teeming with crime at night.

Just 2 days ago, there was a triple shooting in that area and murders average about 2 a week in that area. Both daytime and night muggings are very common. The DC City Council has actually warned citizens to carry $20 at all times in case of street robbery. If you have at least $20, the robber will not get angry and shoot you.

Metro is not the safest form of transportation since there are muggings around the entrances almost every night.

It might be safer to stay in Iowa or wherever you are from.
No...unless you move into the real capital hill...real estate companies try to extend capital hill into other neighborhoods to sell houses for more money....stay out of the northeaster parts...because simply put we dont want yall here...and yall make easy targets to get robbed...have fun!
