What are fun things to do with children in the DC metro area?

Travel Info
I have 2 young nephews ages 7 and 9...I wanted to do something fun with them. I wanted to know if something interesting is going to happen in the dc metro area so I could spend some time with them. I am a college student and I don't have money to do expensive things (but if its really cool their parents might pay), I want to do something fairly cheap (or even free) that is accessible by public transportation as I don't have a car. Or something in the Montgomery county area because we could be dropped off. Any suggestions...my poor little nephews are bored. Thanks :)

Travel Tips
You didn't mention a specific time so I don't know if planning for this weekend is too short of a notice or not...

Rockville is having their "Hometown Holidays" this Memorial day weekend. It's a free (food tickets will cost etc) event that's being held in the town square (Movie theatre, the new library, court houses, that area) it's walkable from the Rockville metro (you will need to cross over Rockville pike)

There's kid's activities & shows (including a clown show on Saturday, and Reptiles and Puppets on Sunday), a "taste of" where you can sample local resturant dishes, as well as other live entertainment, merchant booths etc.

Is Six Flaggs open ? or go to the Baltimore Inner harbor and go to the National Aquarium, I think its only 10 bucks kids get discounts

Smithsonian Museum is the best in D.C.I'm not sure how much it costs to get in,but it's very fascinating for people of all ages.
National zoo and the Smithsonians! (I live in Frederick).

Chinatown is a blast to walk around in too.

Free and hours of entertainment.
The Zoo keeps kids entertained - there may be a small entrance fee but I think they get you with the concessions stands. its also metro accessible- YOu could take them to see the WWII memorial and the other sites (kids may not like a lot of walking but its great learning experience)
Also try the little know DC Aquarium. near the mall.
