Travel Tips
The Smithsonian, which includes a host of museams, mostly around the Mall, and they are free. There are a number of other museums -- including the Spy museum, which is cool, but get very crowded and requires reservations.

There are the various monuments and memorials, also mostly around the Mall, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam Memorial, etc. The Washington Monument requires tickets, which can be obtained in advance or the morning of your visit.

The Bureau of Printing and Engraving does a tour, which is really cool. You can tour the White House, Congress. or sit on on the Supreme Court (October-June).

There is also the zoo and aquarium. Source(s): Resident.
Other Travel Tips
Visit the Meseum(sp?) of the American Indain...Its so beautiful and FREE!!!
I'm going in a few weeks with my family and my mother-in-law recommended first taking a bus tour to get several views/stops in.
The Number ONE place is:
The National Gallery of Art.
Obviously there's all the monuments and memorials and museums.... there's also Arlington National Cemetary, just over the border in VA.
Yes, absolutely!!! Monument tower, Natl. Zoo, the White House (look this one up for tour dates for tourists -- they will not let you in without special arrangements, permission...this is a very private, restricted area).

Natl. Archives Museum, Spy Museum, um....lol...oh, and there is a restaurant I recommend...Benihana. Japanese restaurant that will make your food right in front of you! They have these stove top tables where visitors can gather around the table, and the chef comes up and takes your order...he then gets the ingredients for each food ordered, brings it up to your table, and BAM!! He startes makin' the food for ya right there in front of you. You'll love it, I promise.

Also, take a ride on the DC metro, just for the fun of it. It makes frequent stops, so you can get off wherever you like to go in DC.
