Travel Tips
Try Point Lookout which is at the end of MD 5 in St. Mary's County. I've always wanted to go there just for grins. There is also a State Park and you pass by MD's colonial capital, St. Mary's City, which is full of historical and colonial sites.
Others
Try dctours. I booked a tour with them and had a great time seeing the sights. They have lots to choose from in all different lengths.

Here are the ones we've done on our Podcast:

Richmond - about 2 hours away, brimming with Independence and Civil War History

The C and O Canal National Historical Park in Maryland and/or Great Falls in Mc Lean - Canal Rides, great Hiking, beautiful natural area.

Virginia or Maryland Wineries. There are clusters of them in the Leesburg Area, in the Warrenton Area, and out by the mountains. Favorites nearby include Loudoun Valley Vineyards,Piedmont, and Pearmund Cellars.

Manassas National Battlefield - Civil War History, site of both battles of Bull Run. Or Antietim, in Maryland.

Sully Plantation, and the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air and Space Museum out by Dulles Airport.

Gunston Hall in Virginia, the home of George Mason

Oh, and Mount Vernon, of course.

In DC have you been to the Arboretum? Hillwood Gardens? Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens?

I would suggest Brookside Gardens for their Wings of Fancy Butterfly exhibit for good afternoon outing. Brookside is part of Wheaton Regional Park in Montgomery County. It is on Glenallen Avenue just off of Randolph Road at Georgia Avenue. The exhibit is wonderful. There are around 500 butterflies flying in the indoor conservatory. They are from North America, Central America, and Asia. The cost is $5 for adults and $4 for under 13.

Choose a sunny day and go after 1 pm so the crowds of schoolkids are gone. It is magical experience to have clouds of butterflies all around you.
Natural Bridge, about 3hrs from dc
