I'll be going to DC this summer. How do I ride the Metro for cheap? |
Travel Info I dont want to steal Travel Tips You can buy an all day farecard if you are going to different destinatiions. You can't steal on the Metro, unless you take someone's purse. There are gates that read your farecard and let you through. Others Go during "reduced fare" hours. Regular fare hours(normal higher price) are in effect on weekdays from opening to 9:30 a.m., 3-7 p.m. and 2 a.m. to closing. Also, if you plan on traveling all over the city, you might consider buying an all day fare ticket. It's a base price of around $6. I get lucky all the time and someone gives me their all day pass when they're done with it, usually in the evening. Lastly, if you can, walk between places in the city as much as possible. This will cut down on your cost. http://www.wmata.com/riding/hours_fares.... Government employees get a free metro benefit. They are called metrochecks and some employees sell them for 50 cents to the dollar. It is illegal and I am not saying you should do it--and that employees should sell their metrofare that I paid for with my tax dollars. But it happens and is a cheap (illegal) way to ride the metro. You could try to play a musical instrument and solicit money. Problem is that Metro already has a program for musicians to entertain passengers and there's no soliciting allowed. |
