Travel Tips
because of the white colored white wash paint originally used and then the white colored marble used after the building was destroyed by fire during the war of 1812 [1814]
Others
because when the builders 1st came to build it, they decided to paint the bricks white followed by the marbled bricks so the white house is named after the whiteness of the house.
There's a couple of theories. One is that it related to the burning in 1812; however, there are references to it being called "white house" in 1811.

Another is that George and Martha Washington lived on the White House Plantation. You could look in wikipedia for further info on that.

It wasn't officially called the White House until the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
The link I've included explains the naming conventions of the White House. I don't know about the earliest reference they give of it being called the white house in 1811, but the rest of the information seems to be right on. Any way it is a white house, it isn't a blue or green house. It has been known by many names it just came standard during the beginning of the 20th century to call it the white house.
