How do you compare the DC metroplex with NYC, LA and Chicagoland? |
Travel Info Many have praised the Northwestern Quadrant, Northern Virginia and Montgomery County in Maryland...but compared to other metropolitan areas: like NYC, LA, Chicagoland and San Francisco, where does the DC area stand? Is it better or worse? Why? Travel Tips Northwest DC is definitely the nicest part of the city, and Northern Virginia and Montgomery County are the nicest suburbs. In my opinion, it's better than Los ANgeles by far (which is the WORST major city in the country, except for Houston maybe). DC has among the worst traffic, and it's very very expensive. Only San Francisco is worse in those regards I believe (although SF has better weather and friendlier people). The weather in DC is the worst of all of those cities I think. Basically, all of those cities have excellent cultural stuff - museums, nightlife, theater/opera/music, etc... But I would say after LA, DC is probably the worst of the cities you mentioned. The only GOOD thing about DC is that the Smithsonian museums are all excellent and free. Others I prefer the DC area over both. While NYC has better public transportation, traffic is still miserable, the cost of living is very high, and the city is so large that there's no real feeling of community. Chicago has inefficient public transportation, high unemployment, and is sprawling--- you can live almost 2 hours away from Chicago and it's still considered the suburbs. DC has decent (but not great) public transportation, good employment rates (especially in the IT sector), lots of interesting things to do, plus milder winters than NYC and Chicago. I love to visit both NYC and Chicago but wouldn't want to live in either one. |
