Affordable vacations near DC? |
Travel Info My husnad and I want to take a small vacation in September. Are there any places near DC that are affordable and offer a lot to do besides sitting on a beach? Travel Tips I would suggest getting a hotel in lodging in Williamsburg VA. One beautiful timeshare we enjoy RENTING via EBAY is called FAIRFIELD GOVERNOR's GREEN that offers lovely spacious new accommodations at reasonable prices if you patiently wait. Definitely avoid Fairfield Kings Gate and Patriot Place. Williamsburg Plantation is okay but not as nice as Governors Green. There is a lot of interesting things to see like the Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and many local beaches in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area that also incl Fort Monroe that has the prison cell that Jefferson Davis was kept during the Civil War. Virgnia Beach and Norfolk VA is like 45 minutes away and Richmond has a lot of interesting sites as well. I might add the Premium Outlet Mall in Williamsburg is a favorite of my wife and many females. In fact I was shocked to hear that someone my wife worked with who lived in Calif actually drove down to Williamsburg to shop while she was visiting. Good Luck and Enjoy Your Time Off! Others Yes, of course. You can go out to the Shenandoah National Park/Blue Ridge Parkway, and camp and hike and go to the ranger programs in the park. Also out that way are many wineries for visiting, natural wonders (caverns in the Luray area, Natural Bridge, and in Staunton, VA you can visit the farm history museum, among others) If your interests are more urban, Richmond has a lot to offer, with several wonderful museums, great manor houses, and both Revolutionary and Civil War History. Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown present, I think, the best combination of history and fun I know of. Plus there is Busch Gardens and other theme type parks nearby. There are inexpensive accomodations in that area, try the White Lion for charming and inexpensive accomodations - and in September you will be between the family travel season and the holiday travel season, so prices should be relatively low. If you want to go to the beach, I recommend North Carolina's Outer Banks. Again there are inexpensive motels all along the northern banks, and lots of camping in the south. In addition to the beaches, there is lots of activities - hang gliding and the National Monuent in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk, lots of shopping in Nags Head, and historical and garden sites in nearby Manteo. Not to mention the National Seashore, and ranger activities associated with that. You could also visit Philadelphia, where there is lots to see (but more admission charges than DC.) Williamsburg, VA is great. You can tour the old town for free & there's a ton of battle sites, if your into that. Bush Gardens is great, but a little pricey if you're on a tight budget. Oh, and you could easily drive to VA beach for the day. The do free (and cheap) concerts there in the summer at the ampitheater--check it out online. (Williamsburg is about 2 hrs from DC, VA Beach is 3max.) Atlantic City, NJ. There's some great hotels & casinos if you're into that as well as a fun boardwalk atmosphere, if your into that. It's also not too crowded in September, which is nice & there's shows to be seen too. This is about a 4 hour drive from DC. Baltimore, MD. The aquarium is great & the inner harbor is nice for a day. Arundle Mills Mall would occupy a day as well. Fort McHenry is pretty that time of year if your interested in history. Then, drive to Annapolis for a day (45 mins from downtown B-more) the mall is great & the historic downtown is fabulous with all sorts of specialty shops, great restaurants & historic buildings--a must see. New York City. Everyone thinks pricey, but it can be done on a budget. Stay in Jersey, near Staten Island (saves about $100 a night) then, take the ferry in. (I've done this, it's fun) You could spend days wandering around & window shopping--FAO Schwartz, Macy's....also, hit a comedy club (cheaper than shows) or treat yourselves to the incredible dining there. NJ is only about 5 hours from DC by car, but Amtrack is reasonablly priced, too! Wherever you decide, have fun! There are really no beaches per se in D.C. Close would be Annapolis, MD. There is plenty to do in the downtown Annapolis area. Weather will be nice as well. There are shopping, great food and boat/bay tours. There are tours of the historic buildings and it's close to Baltimore where you should check out as well. |
