To residents of Washington DC, where will I go during my vacation there for a week?No museums please.?

Travel Info
I will be with 2 other girls and we want to see places that locals enjoy going to, like restaurants that are not fancy, but have good food... attractions or shopping areas where we can get souvenirs, etc.

Travel Tips
There are some other great answers, but I agree, you want to walk down the mall and visit the various Monuments, The walk Washington Monument to WWII Memorial, to Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, to Korean War Memorial to Lincoln Memorial, then to the tidal Basin for the FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial is just great.

I have to disagree with folks who push Georgetown. Georgetown is great and interesting, but it's also very touristy. I think your better bet is to visit Adams Morgan, the U-Street Shaw area, or Chinatown and the Penn Quarter. And these areas all have great moderate to inexpensive restaurants (check out the Washingtonian Magazine's web site for restaurant ideas!) These neighborhoods are more where locals go, with fewer tourists. Penn Quarter has a number of places you can get great souvenirs and shop and Adams Morgan has great boutiques.

Other non-museum stuff that is great

The Kennedy Center has a wonderful daily free concert at 6 PM. Get out there, tour the building, and then stay for the concert on the Millennium Stage.

The National Zoo is great, and if you are into Gardens, the Botanic Garden on the Mall, the National Arboreturm, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardents, and Hillwood Gardens and Mansion are great for that kind of thing.

Go out on the water on one of the dinner cruises - the Spirit of Washington, Oddyssey, Dandy (from Alexandria). Skip the hokey show - go out on deck and watch the beautiful scenery go by!

Union Station - good shopping, good eating, great history!

I hope that you don't include some of the government sites in your "Museums" heading - the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Washington Monument, Archives (more like a museum, this last one) are great.

Oh, and go to a Washington National's Baseball Game!!!! Source(s): http://www.washingtonian.com/ - Washingtonian Web Site

Other Travel Tips
Georgetown is pretty cool. Bunch of restaurants, bars and stores to shop at. Nightlife there is even better.....Have fun!
Walk everywhere you can. You see more. And get exercise too.
The monuments are a must. The National Mall is a must for cheap souvenires. Georgetown is a must ~ The bars, eaterys, shopping there is fantastic.
Arlington National Cemetary. The tidal basin.
Why NO MUSEUMS????
The Smithsonia, Aeronatic Museum & National Gallery of Art are fabulous.
Go over to Alexandria too ~ antique shops, art galleries, and also take a drive to Virgina's countryside ~ it is beautiful.
Not sure why no museums. They are fantastic - and absolutely free. Not to mention that summer in DC is not exactly nice. There will be days, several day stretches, where you cannot even breathe the air. Plan on some indoor activities.

Other than that, you must walk the mall and see the monuments. Georgetown is fabulous. Ollie's Trolley is a local tradition - burgers, fries, shakes, etc. - at 13th and F? 13th and E? F I think. Ben's Chili Bowl is also a well known landmark. Bill Cosby frequented the place, and still goes whenever he's in DC. Blackie's House of Beef at 23rd and N? Capitol City Brewing Co. at 11th and H. L'Enfant Plaza. Washington Circle. Lafayette Park - across from the White House. See if Concepsion (sp?) is still there. Doing a sit-in for world peace since the 80's. Ford Theatre. Folger Shakespeare Library. They have a mini-mock up of the Globe where they put on plays and it is totally cool.

Essentially everywhere you turn in DC there are interesting things to do.
