What can you say about the city of Washington D.C.? |
Travel Info What can you say about the city of Washington D.C.? Travel Tips You didn't mention in your question whether you're interested in visiting DC or living there, which for me are two completely different things. As a person visiting DC as a tourist, there is so much to do - the museums alone could keep you busy for weeks. Plus there's the zoo, and all of the music and performing arts, and the history, and great eateries. While there are muggings - guess what, it's a city and crime happens. DC is cognizant that lots of revenue comes from tourists, and natives tend to be friendly and helpful to tourists - while they may smile a little at your Hawaiian shirt and fanny pack. DC is a vacation destination that literally has something for everyone - kids, history buffs, sports fans, politicos, fans of performing arts, etc. Everyone can find something they like in DC - and it's not hard to find that something. I can only think of two other places in the US - New York City and San Francisco - that could make a similar claim. The only thing really missing in DC is a beach. However, living in DC is much different. People tend to lead a very fast-paced life. Just watch people during rush hour scamper down the escalator steps to catch the metro - despite the fact that another train will be there in less than 5 minutes. Everyone is in a hurry and the frantic pace can take some getting used to. Many people either work in government, or their friends work in government, or their boyfriend works in government - it's like three degrees of separation between you and George W. Many people, even though they may have a decent-paying job, work second jobs to help make ends meet. The cost of living is high, particularly housing. It's not unusual to pay $1,000+ for a one-bedroom apartment, if you want a decent neighborhood within walking distance to a Metro station. While DC could never be accused of being the fashion capital of the world, appearance is HUGE here for the people who live here - people go to the gym, they buy nice clothes (albeit a conservative suit), and want to look well groomed. In my opinion, DC is a town that's really best for someone in their 20's and 30's getting started in their career who come to the area to get experience, make contacts, and get a much better job and eventually leave town. They love the fast pace and can thrive in it. This makes it a fairly transient area - which means many people realize they're not going to be there long and making substantive friendships can be tough going. Plus, many people working second jobs means they have less free time. Overall - DC can be monstrously hot and humid in the summer. The public transit system is safe, reliable, and reasonably affordable. Whether you're a tourist or a resident, there's lots to do - although over time, the crowds and the overall pace may be a nuisance. DC is a city everyone can love - it's just key to figure out if it's better for you to be a tourist or a resident. Source(s): lived in DC area twice, now frequent visitor. Other Travel Tips Washington, D.C. Is a beautiful city filled with history and art. The museums are awesome are very informative. The statues are wonderful. The history of it all is what makes it great! And it's surrounding cities are cool to! I loved the Smithsonian Museums...best part? They're FREE! It's a great city...rich in history! It's muggy. It's full of marble and concrete barricades. Incessant tourist chatter is most often broken by the sound of emergency vehicles. Cameras with a hundred eyes watch you through the swarming flies. The Metro is FUN. It's a cool place to visit if you want to be a tourist. All kinds of mesuems to check out, along with Capitol Hill, etc. It's not a place I'd prefer to live in. It's too crowded for my liking, and very easily to get lost in if you decide to drive around. I say though that I usually enjoy my trips to DC, which is usually for a rock concert. Lotsa great history, free museums, lots of street beggars, and hide your wallet! Muggings happen alot! Cabs can be good or bad they are on a ZONE and you either get totally ripped off, or a really great deal, know your DC map, and be ready to give the driver exact directions so you can stay in minimal zones! |
