I am moving to Alexandria to be closer to work. What's a good/safe area to live? Any streets/intersections?

Travel Info
I just accepted a position in Alexandria, VA and am moving there in about a month. I'm a single, 22 year old female and am in search of a safe area to live in. I'd like to be about 20 minutes from work. Does any streets/intersecitons or areas come to mind? I'm thinking of renting a one bedroom apartment. I heard old town was a nice place to live. I'd like to be close to the nightlife as well as resturants etc. Somewhere where young people live I guess... Thanks for your help!

Travel Tips
I live near the eisenhower metro station, across the bridge in cameron. I know there's a new tower going in closer to the metro though, so try there. I think they're leasing in July.

King street doesn't have any large apt buildings within walking distance, but Braddock rd, Crystal City, and Pentagon city have great places for the younger crowd. Pentagon City is the most expensive, but has great nightlife and shopping.

Then again, if you are driving, old town is an amazing place to live. Get in on a row house and make sure it comes with a parking spot! Some good streets are Washington, King, Duke, and anything between those streets..
Others
Old Town is your best bet that close, but it might be expensive and harder to find a place. But anywhere in and around Alexandria should be fine, except for a few spots here and there. But if you work on the western side of Alexandria, you could live there or in Arlington. Any place within walking distance of a Metro stop in Arlington should be urban and hip.
Agree with the previous poster. Live as close to work as possible. Your sanity will thank you for it. Old Town is very nice. I have a friend who lives across the street from the metro down there and loves it. US-1 can access the GW Parkway for a quick hop downtown. If you are working inside the beltway along the I-66 corridor, you may want to check out Ballston, Clarendon and Arlington (mentioned below). Those places are going through some major renovations and bringing the younger crowds in.
I live in NoVA.
I used to live about 4 miles south of Alexandria, and it is safe, affordable, and has access to public transportation. There were areas that had a good amount of younger people living there.
Stay in Va. DO NOT STAY IN DC OR GEORGETOWN
