Is it easier to stay really close to the Capitol, or to stay somewhere just outside DC and take Metro in? |
Travel Info We will probably be driving a rental car to park at the hostel, and then taking public transportation or walking. We are really only interested in seeing the things at the National Mall area, the museums and White House etc. Travel Tips i found the metro to be quite convenient when I visited there. DO NOT try to drive into the Mall area. There is NO parking. I don't mean there are parking places and if you wait, you can find a spot. I mean there is NOWHERE to park. Many hotels, etc. charge you to park, so check into that. A car is more convenient for outlying trips. DC is a great walking city. Others We stayed in Falls Church last year. There was a Metro station by the hotel and took no time at all to get to the Mall area. i suggest staying in laurel, maryland it will save you about 100+ dollars and by the way the green and red lines are the closest in that area. The Metrorail in Washington DC does an excellent job taking care of the tourists. If you and your family are flying into DC then of the 3 airports (Reagon National, Dulles, or BWI) the best choices if you want to avoid taxis and are not carrying much luggage would be Reagan National Airport bec it has its own Metrorail stop, then Dulles Airport which is much farther out to the west, transportation into DC is much more expensive than Reagan. Where to Stay might be rather expensive running $100 and up per night but the safest places where it seems like the bulk of the tourists stay are located in Arlington County VA as evidenced by the crowded Metrorail in the morning and evening commutes. Hotels in Crystal City, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, Ballston, Clarendon and Falls Church all have Metrorail stops. Also the one in Pentagon City has one of the larger indoor malls plus across the street is a Costco Warehouse. If you are renting a car and flew into Dulles, then it is possible to stay in nice lodging facilities in Fairfax County but you would have to pay for parking at the Metro or if you drove into DC, I would not advise bec parking is limited and tickets would simply ruin your vacation. Best of Luck and Enjoy Your Well Deserved Vacation! The only place we found close to the mall that wasn't sky high expensive was the Hotel Harrington. Now, it is not a fancy place but, an old family owned hotel that has been renovated as much as possible without a complete teardown. It is clean and comfortable and well staffed. It is only a block off of Pennsylvania Avenue and within walking distance to almost anything you want to do. For further trips like to Arlington Cemetery it is only two blocks from a Metro station. Plenty of restaurants in the area including Harry's Grill and Saloon right at the hotel. They have a website to check. Search on Hotel Harrington. We parked our car in their garage and never moved it all week. |
