Weekend vacation within driving distance of D.C.?

Travel Info
Any recommendations? My anniversary (2nd) is next weekend and we wanted to go away for the weekend. Somewhere not too crowded, but within driving distance of Washington, D.C. Any suggestions? I could use some help with this.

Travel Tips
There are TONS of options. You could go to Richmond and stay at the Jefferson. You could drive to the Northern Neck of Virginia and enjoy some smaller waterfront towns. You could drive out to the Shenandoah National Forest. You could drive to Deep Creek Lake. You could drive to Youghiogeny. St. Michaels, MD. Try a B&B in the Valley. L'Auberge et Provencale is wonderful.

So many options within driving distance of DC.

It sort of depends on what you want to do, but if you're looking for a laid back romantic weekend, check out Orange, Va. Montpelier (James Madison's estate) is nearby and has spectacular gardens. There are lots of B&B's in Orange. My wife and I stayed at the Holladay House a few years ago after we got engaged and had a wonderful weekend. The Holladay House also has discount tickets to Montpelier for guests.

Here are a couple of things we've done for an anniversary that you might like. I'm guessing no beaches, since they WILL be crowded.

Berkeley Springs W.V. is a great Spa Town, was the spa that our founding fathers went to. We stayed at the Bath House, link below, where we got two nights and two massages (and hot tub soaks) as a package. The room is an apartment, and it let me make a nice dinner one night, while my husband took us out for a nice dinner the other. We also visited the state park and took a walking tour. The castle is cool, but no longer open.

Another really neat idea is the Bed and Breakfast called the Castle in Mount Savage, MD. This is near Cumberland, MD, and they provide a daily tea as well as a fabulous breakfast. Nearby you can visit a number of things, Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, just over the border is great.

Another option is to check out Virginia Wine Country. Visit three or four wineries, then cuddle up at a little bed and breakfast at the end of the day. If money is flowing, go to the Inn at Little Washington.

If you wanted to do the beach, I recommend the Outer Banks of NC, if you can get in. There are lots of beaches here, so being alone is very possible.

Berkeley Springs is about a 3 hour drive. Mt. Savage is about 3.5 to 4, Outer Banks are 5, and Virginia Wine country can be between 1 (in the Loudoun or Warrensburg area) to 2 (in the Charlottesville area).
