Driving To Pittsburgh (Kennywood) from Washington DC on the 4th - bad idea?

Travel Info
Our family and I are planning on leaving the DC area after the fireworks/eventson the fourth and driving to the eastern Pittsburgh - is this insanity traffic wise trying to get out of the city? Thanks to those who responded to my previous question.

Travel Tips
Park at any suburban Metro Station - Vienna, Greenbelt or Shady Grove and take Metro - take Metro - take Metro - take Metro to the fireworks.

Shady Grove is adjacent to I-370 which leads to I-270. Vienna is adjacent to I-66. Greenbelt is adjacent to I-495.

If you can avoid the PA Turnpike and take I-68 (or alternatively, I-66 to I-81 to I-70 to I-68) to US 40 to PA 51 - you'll be home by the early hours of July 5th. Source(s): I've driven on the 4th of July and did not experience severe traffic problems - people tend to take the entire week off if the holiday falls on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Other Travel Tips
i wouldn't be surprised that if you left the 4th, you wouldnt get back until the 6th.

Yeah, ur not alone in trying to get outta the city.
i live 21 miles east of kennywood.
you're coming from dc?

i wouldn't even drive to kennywood on that day from here!

i wouldn't recommend that myself, unless you like a busy turnpike, and a crazy departure from kennywood after it closes.
lets see... Kennywood on the 4th...in my opinion that would amount to crazy traffic on the way there, not being able to move within the park itself, waiting three and a half hours for under two minutes on the Phantom, Swing shot, or that new ride that has super crazy lines, and then facing traffic on the way home at like one in the morning. if you're luckky it might rain and cut down on the crowds :P but, hey, if thats your idea of a good time, i'm not gonna stop you.
being there on a normal july day... one can only imagine how much worse it would be on the one and only fourth of july
Kennywood is notoriously empty on the week surrounding the 4th of July - it's the best time to go. It has a lot of competition with community parades and the 3 Rivers Regatta going on in Downtown.

As far as traffic it shouldn't be too bad. It's just a one day holiday so there's not too much extra traffic on the roads but if you are coming in on the weekend be advised that 376 - (which is the main highway leading to downtown Pittsburgh) - is CLOSED causing some major traffic problems - if you MapQuest Directions click on the option to avoid this road and you'll be just fine.

Have a great time in Pittsburgh and while in town you should check out the city's Fireworks display - it's unbeatable (or just watch Kennywood's)

And an incline ride and a Just Ducky Tour are a must
