Going on a trip to DC in December, how long should we stay? |
Travel Info Some friends and I are going on a trip to DC in december. We really want to get a good look around and see all the monuments, museums, etc... basically everything there is to see. We will be staying with friends/family. How long do you think we should stay? A week? Little more? Little less? How long would you stay? Travel Tips Here's the problem with DC- everyone's right that there is a month's worth of stuff. But if you came to DC an stayed a month, not only would you have driven your family you're staying with nuts, but you'll burn yourself out. So it's a matter of balance... I'd say that 5-7 days is probably good, maybe up to 10. Here's how I'd break it down. Day 1: DC Neighborhoods. Get a feel for the city before you go completely tourist. Visit Eastern Market, Capital Hill, Dupont, maybe U Street or Adams Morgan or Mt. Pleasant. There are wonderful self guided walking tours through DC to plaques that have information about the neighborhood. See the first link down below... You'll enjoy DC more if you see it as a city and not just "that place with all the stuff." Day 2: Touristy stuff. Go see the White House and the mall. Walk down to the Washington Monument, the WWII, Korean, Lincoln, FDR, Jefferson, etc. Plan to walk a lot this day. You will be tired. Day 3: Cultural Stuff. Go to the Smithsonians. My favorites are the Freer, Sackler, and Hirshorn for art. The Air and Space can be cool, but it's always very, very crowded. Go to the holocaust museum. You need tickets, but it's free. Day 4: Rest. You'll need it. Go hang out in Dupont for the day. People watch in the circle. Browse through the cool book stores (Kramers, Second Story). Eat at Zorba's Cafe. Maybe go out that evening in Adams Morgan. Day 5: Cleanup. Go pick up any Smithsonians or monuments that you missed. You might consider going to the Zoo Day 6: Mt. Vernon. You'll need most of the day here. On the way out or back you should stop at the Pope-Leighey house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It's very nearby and pretty neato. I'd also pick up a Washington City Paper, and the Sunday edition of the Post. Both will have lots of information on stuff to do. Have fun! Other Travel Tips I have family and friends there,Its always something to do I would stay for a week[by the way if you do go try to visit the ESPN Zone] there is so much to do in DC. stay a month if you can. you probably won't get everything in. but you can have fun trying! You could spend a lifetime and not see everything. At least a week, more if possible. The possibilities are endless. The only limit is your budget. You could spend months there & not see everything. A week - 10 days is good depending how much you want to see & how quickly you move around. (and how long your family/friends can house you!) You could spend 2-3 days on the monuments alone, then there's the Smithsonian, to do the highlights of it justice you need a couple days. Then the classics--the white house, congress, bureau of printing & engraving (show up early for that one--it's hard to get in) For a change of pace, go to the International Spy Museum--it's a little pricey but worth every penny! It's also near Ford Theater where Lincoln was shot. Have a wonderful trip!!!! to see general attractions 2 weeks...to see more....a month.....lot of good restaurants...lot of museums...make sure to get tickets in advance 4 the white house tour....arlington cemetery....be time wise... |
