Travel Info What is so special about Waterford Crystal? Travel Tips I took a tour of the Waterford Crystal factory, and anyone who has been on this tour doesn't have to ask that question. What makes Waterford Crystal so special is that it is hand-crafted. From start to finish, it is made with men's hands...some men spend over 40 hours working on one piece of crystal, and, if something goes wrong and the crystal has a defect, they don't sell it. They break it on the ground, melt down the crystal, and start over. 75% of the cost of the crystal goes toward labor, and, while many of the employees are paid on a piece-rate basis, many of the engravers and other master craftsmen cannot be due to the intensity of engraving one piece of crystal.
