What is living in Winnipeg like? |
Travel Info What is living in Winnipeg like? Travel Tips Winnipeg has ample, free, live entertainment in the summer months. The people are the best! Food is #1 - great restaurants, great prices and lots of shopping. Housing - I don't believe there is cheaper housing anywhere. I live in a decent neighbour - 850 sq ft. 2 br bungalow - the cost less than $100,000 - my house payments are less than rent. It's beautifully treed divided by two rivers. You sure notice the seasons here. Spring (although initially a little dusty and dirty) comes on really fast. Summer - definately beach time - hot, hot, hot. Fall - my favourite - amazing colours, cooler temperatures, very comfortable. Winter - not so great - but even when it's -40 the sky is blue and the sun is shining. We're a city with a small town feel. Most of the crimes in the city are gang related (gangs hitting other gangs) or domestic related. If you don't hang around them you don't have much problems. Unfortunately car theft is a problem here - so make sure you have a club and/or a car alarm. Every city has problems though. I've lived in Winnipeg all of my life except 3 years in California - I couldn't wait to get back to Winnipeg. The sky is still blue here - not browny grey. And hey, we're the Slurpee capital of the world! I've thrown in some sites which may be helpful. Other Travel Tips Let me say right off the top that I would not want to live there. And only because I spent many years on the prairies and now want something different. That aside, I know many people whe live there now or who have lived there...and loved Winnipeg. They were not crazy about the cold, but they had great friends, there are many cultural things to do, etc. It's true that the winters in Winnipeg can be severe by most people's standards. Going down to -40 or below is not unusual. However, most people get used to it. You learn how to dress, how to look after your car, and you find things to do in the winter. Great city for cross-country skiing, for example. Winnipeg has a lot of things going for it that you won't find in other cities of similar size, because it is a regional centre. It's the biggest city for miles around. So, you get a symphony, a 1st class ballet company, a good music scene. Winnipeg also has a diverse ethnic community, exemplified by the summer Folklorama festival. Kind of like a mini-world's fair, with lots of good ethnic food, music and dance. It also means lots of good ethnic restaurants. Winnipeg has a thriving Ukrainian community - they even have schools with Ukrainian language programs. And the best perogies in Canada will be found in Winnipeg! The people are friendly, the cost of living is reasonable. It can be a great place to live. cold in winter hot in summer to many mosquitoes not much to do but watch the grass grow to many bikers and hookers they are every where which means the crime rate is very high so you need to wear bullet proof shorts the homeless live in the downtown area so theres 10 bums every yard they are even in the lobby of the fancy hotels downtown other than that its not such a bad place Winnipeg is great....Minus 40 temperatures happen...possibly 10 days a year, on the average. easy to adapt to it. As far as "Drag Racer"'s answer....in his question and in this answer, he seems to focus on Hookers and Bikers. While there are hookers in Winnipeg, they are concentrated in the rather SEEDY areas (which are few and far between). Bikers usually leave One alone, if One leaves them alone, unless One conducts "Business" with them. You can stay in Winnipeg for 6 months and not see a hooker, or biker, unless you seek them out, for Business purposes. If so, you are compounding the "Alleged" problem, and perhaps should wear "Bullet proof" shorts. Lived in Winnipeg all my life |
