Easy and cheap. The best way is to buy a ticket at Zurich Hauptbahnhof (train station). Trains to Lucerne run every half hour with a return ticket costing about 44 swiss francs (2nd class). 1st class is about 75 francs - half those figures for a one way. The trip only takes about 50 minutes, and you end up in one of the prettiest towns in Europe. Take the train, it is the most affordable mode of transportation in Switzer land. You may have to get out in Thalwil or Zug and wait half an hour for the next train, but you have a reasonable chance of making it.
